There are a few considerations that you will need to take before you launch feet first into the industry, so let’s take a look at those first.
Home or away?
When you are working in shipping, depending on your career choice, you will likely often be away at sea. It is essential to know how you will react to being on the open ocean for weeks on end. You will be away from friends and family for a while, but the crew will become like family at that time. The close quarters leave little to the imagination, and if you don’t have sea legs in the early days, they will be able to get you through it. There are land-based careers in the shipping industry, too, and these may be better suited to you, so let’s take a look at a few of those options.Land-Based Options
On-shore careers only fall into a few categories, however, that is expanding over time. Port operations, shipbuilding, and repairs and crossover positions.Port Operations
If you are looking for a hub of activity and variety, then the port is the place for you. There will be a lot of people moving in and out of the port. Shipping vessels, personnel, government officials, personnel, and cargo, to name a few. Aside from the people track that needs to happen, you will also be required to keep track of loading, unloading, port security, international and domestic regulations, and more. Here are some of the positions:- Transportation manager
- Chartering manager
- Shipping broker
- Marine engineer
- Fleet engineer
Crossover
Crossover positions are those who are shipping enthusiasts but don’t really want to be at sea or the ports. They will work with the many resources that make sure that international shipping goes off without a hitch. Here are a few:- Accountant
- HR Specialist
- Marine biologist
- Maritime lawyer
Shipbuilding and Repair
This is pretty much what it says on the tin. You will be working on designing new vessels, the engineering and/or construction of them. And of course, current vessels will need to be repaired ready to head back out to sea. There is a range of careers available, each job will have a wide and exciting list of responsibilities and of course the potential to travel across the ocean on more than one occasion. It is also worth noting that the shipping industry is being shaken up and made even more interesting with new technology, enabling efficiency and speed better than ever before.
