How to be romantic on a college budget

By Bex Walton, Semesterz

Just because you’re at college and you aren’t rolling in the dollar (yet!) that doesn’t mean you can’t be romantic towards your significant other. Don’t use this as an excuse and instead be a little creative to show your partner how much they mean to you! To get you started, here are some budget-friendly ideas to inject some romance into your relationship.

Words don’t cost anything

[post_ads]As JLo says, “even if you were broke my love don’t cost a thing.” It’s important to remember that you don’t need to splash out on fancy gifts or pricey meals, sometimes just a sweet note packed in with their lunch bag, or a romantic letter sent to them can mean so much more as it is from the heart!

Indoor movie night

Going to the movies can be a little pricey at times; however, there’s nothing stopping you from bringing the movies to you! Set up a cozy blanket fort in your dorm room, grab some microwave popcorn and their favorite snacks and put on a film – instant movie experience on just a few dollars! (Plus, as a bonus, it’s just the two of you, so no annoying talking from other people!)

A picnic

If you’ve got nice weather, pack a picnic and head to the park. The food doesn’t have to cost a whole bunch; it’s the excitement of eating it outdoors together that is more important. Pack a blanket to sit on and perhaps a book to read and enjoy being together in the sunshine.

Stargazing

Stargazing has always been one of the most romantic things, and even better – it’s free! Bonus points if you have a truck that you can full with blankets and pillows and cuddle up under the stars. A completely free date night idea that will make her swoon! (This can be repeated with a scenic sunrise or sunset too, so there are many opportunities throughout the day to enjoy a similar experience).

Breakfast in bed

It doesn’t have to be a birthday or anniversary, why not just take your partner breakfast in bed on a random Tuesday? Or before a big test to cheer them up? It should cost less than $5 to whip up some waffles/pancakes/eggs – whatever their favorite is, and for an extra special touch, pick a flower and pop it in a vase on the tray to make it look lovely.

Do something to help them

This doesn’t have to be a huge gesture, but some people feel most loved when their partner thinks about something they can do to help them. For example, could you get their car cleaned? Pick up their laundry? Do their dishes? Something to take a bit of pressure off of them and show them that you care.

Bring the spa to your dorm room

Again, the dream would be to take your beau to a spa, but a college budget just won’t stretch that far, so this is the next best thing! Light some candles (or fairy lights if candles are not allowed in your room), get a nice body oil and give them a massage – there are tutorials on Youtube if you are new to this. If you’re lucky, they might return the favor!

It might feel frustrating that you have to do things on a budget, but when it comes to love, it’s all about the effort!
