What career to choose with a health science degree?


When choosing to undertake a course, it’s not always easy to know what is the right subject to decide on. There are so many factors that you need to consider, such as how much scope the course has and whether you can take different avenues once it’s completed.

You need to spend some time thinking about your aspirations and whether you’ll be able to move towards goals in the future by ensuring your chosen subject doesn’t come with its limitations.

As Health Science is such a diverse field, it’s a good direction to take if you’re not entirely sure of what your eventual occupation will be. Sometimes it’s not always clear on what path we want to take, until we have actually started the learning journey itself.

Health Science involves a large collection of disciplines through the application of science, mathematics, technology and engineering. It’s simply science applied to practical and clinical practice.


There are four main areas of Health Science and these are:

Life Sciences - Look to improve our understanding of illnesses and their diagnosis while developing new treatments for common medical problems, such as infertility or allergies.

Physiological Sciences - Involves examining people directly, to look for any problems in the way that their body is working and using equipment and techniques to restore their bodily functions.

Clinical Engineering and Medical Physics - Is the techniques and technology used to diagnose and treat diseases using ultrasound, MRI and radiation.

Bioinformatics - The development of methods to acquire and analyse biological data using computer science. This includes genomics, health informatics and physical science.

Occupational Therapist

Have a special role in helping people to maintain their daily living after they have had mental, physical or cognitive impairment. Occupational therapy aims to provide patients the ability to do everyday tasks if they are having difficulty.


Physical Therapist

Working in this field involves optimizing the quality of patients lives through hands on care, education and prescribed exercise. Working in Physical Therapy can either be standalone or to support the patients other treatments.


Epidemiologist

This is the study into how diseases spread, by identifying the sources and causes within a population. This science is the key to understanding disease dynamics through the effects of climate change.


Nutritionist and Dietician

They will often work in conjunction with health care staff and physicians to comprise dietary restrictions and nutritional plans for their patients after evaluating their overall health.


Microbiologist

Works to conduct research on microorganisms aimed at developing drugs to fight infectious diseases by undertaking laboratory analysis of microbial cultures and drugs.

If you have decided upon this field, then always do your research thoroughly and understand what is required of you to complete your studies. There are so many different specialties to branch out into, meaning that the world really is your oyster.
