Is Your Career Stalling?

Is Your Career Stalling?

There are few things worse than feeling like your career has stalled in some way. After all, one of the main aspects of anyone's career is a drive to be constantly pushing yourself forward toward a new set of goals. We're all striving to be better and do better all the time so feeling like you're stuck in place with nowhere left to go can be one of the most frustrating and demoralizing things there is. Of course, the worst thing that you can do is to decide that things are just hopeless. There are plenty of ways that you can go about giving your career the jumpstart it needs. However, the first thing you need to do is to identify what it is that has caused your career to stall in the first place.

You're in a bad environment

A lot of the time it's not actually the job itself that's the problem but rather the environment that you find yourself in when you're working. After all, there's nothing worse than trying to get your work done when you're surrounded by utterly toxic people. Any kind of harassment from your coworkers is completely unacceptable and should be immediately reported to your manager but things get a whole lot worse when it's someone with authority over you who has decided to make your life miserable. Of course, it doesn't even need to be that severe. It could just be that you're in an environment that doesn't allow you to do your best work or where you simply don't fit. A lot of the time a simple change of scene can make all the difference here.

You're bored

There are plenty of reasons why you might be bored at work. The most common are either not being given work that challenges you, or being given work that you simply don't find engaging at all. A lot of people assume that a boring job isn't that bad. After all, you can just switch your brain off right? Well, that can actually be a lot more tiring and unpleasant than you might think. The brain is a muscle like everything else and if you're not using it throughout the day then you could well end up feeling tired, sluggish, and miserable. The key is to figure out what it is about your job that you find boring and try to find something that effectively scratches that itch.

You've hit a roadblock

One of the things that a lot of people find when they're going through their career is that they have to hop over various stepping stones to get to where they want to go. However, there's always a chance that you'll find yourself stuck on one of those stepping stones for one reason or another. One of the most common reasons is that you lack the necessary skills, experience, or qualifications to reach the next stage in your career. This is less of a stall in your career and more of a hurdle that you may not be able to jump over yet. The key is to figure out what you need to move forward, whether that's just time spent working in your current position or qualifications from somewhere like the University of Maryland. That way you can make it over that stepping stone and continue your journey towards your goal.

You're afraid

Fear is one of the most common things keeping people from achieving what they really want to in their career. The truth is that going after what you want is incredibly scary. After all, the specter of failure is going to be hanging over you every step of the way and that's a difficult thing to face. However, if you don't face down those fears then you're never even going to have the chance to reach your career goals in the first place.

One of the most common reasons that a lot of people end up with a career that has stalled is because they became comfortable and complacent. After all, no matter what happens, moving onto a new career is always going to constitute some degree of risk and that's something that a lot of people are incredibly hesitant to take on. However, most of the time the things that are going to make your life better are always going to be a challenge that you have to rise to. If you spend all of your time focussing on taking the easy path then you run the risk of never being able to make the most of the career that you have.
