Why celebrity couplings fail so often?

By Stephanie Stevens, Semesterz

Celebrity marriages – they either last or they don’t last. Oh, who are we kidding? About 80% of celebrity unions don’t make it to their 20th anniversary and when the big break up news is announced to the public, fans are just as shocked as they saddened. The truth is, is that being a celebrity of a certain magnitude comes with an excruciating amount of baggage that is filled with dirty laundry. Some of the greatest celebrity couples we’ve seen (Brangelina, TomKat, Bennifer 1 & 2, etc.) were expected to beat the odds. However, just like the majority of celebrity marriages usually do, they bite the dust eventually.

They live under a microscope

[post_ads]Celebrities in the singular term are already scrutinized for what they wear, who they hang out with, and their personal opinions. When you put two, high-profile celebrities together in 1 relationship, the amount of scrutiny involved doubles. They have no privacy, or at least, they attain the amount of privacy that the press and paparazzi choose to give them. This type of stress would be enough to strain even the most average, non-famous of marriages. Communication is one of the most important factors of any marriage and for celebrities, how are they supposed to accurately convey their emotions when any interview they give or public statement they make is twisted for entertainment purposes? Any famous partner, whether they are male or female, would radiate with anxiety just as we would, as civilians.

They mistrust the world & therefore, their partner

A successful celebrity has the world at his or her fingertips. They have access to various social circles, immediate entry to the world’s most exclusive places, and most obviously, the special treatment from any fan or admirer of their craft. At some point, if you’re part of a relationship, you need to decide which is worth the bulk of your time and energy; your significant other or possessing the world in the palm of your hand? At this inevitable fork in the road, mistrust becomes an issue. For celebrities, they either choose to amass their fame or dedicate their time to their partner. They can’t have their cake and eat it, too. In order to feel like your #1 to your partner, you actually have to be treated and shown around as such. Fame requires a heavy skill-set of hustling and self-promotion and at the end of the day, two becomes a crowd when you need to constantly tend to your own professional needs.

They cheat… As painful as that is to admit

If we’re being blunt, here; a direct contribution to failed celebrity marriages are the reported acts of infidelity. Most celebrity marriages, in fact, begin as whirlwind romances. Also, they usually begin on set. The impulsiveness that drives these famous romances usually come at the expense of an already troubled union and it would be foolish not to admit that where one good looking person works, another is likely to be employed on that same set as well. We aren’t implying that every actor or music artist is incapable of remaining faithful. We are, however, simply stating that the amount of temptation and variety that sustains Hollywood is hard to avoid – especially, if you’re one of the best looking, most wanted people in the public eye.

They become consumed by their financial worth

Finally, the easiest element to overlook in a celebrity divorce is the imminent power-imbalance that each partner must either accept, or continue to compete for. Net worths, annual salaries, job offers, magazine covers, exclusive interviews, you name it – each one of these fame factors identifies one partner as more successful, loved, or popular than the other and for a marriage, this could mean big trouble. A little competition is healthy in the workplace, sure. But, in the home, a happy union is one with a united front and as much as they strive to achieve this partnership, sometimes a divide emerges depending upon the more successful significant other’s work schedule and professional expectations. It’s hard to share the person you love most with the rest of the world and it can also be difficult to accept that their high-demand status has an effect on your comfort level as a couple or family.
