Always remember, while you are appearing for an interview, you are competing with many other people for that job. You don’t want anything to lessen your chances, let alone your physical appearance.
Job interviews are an opportunity for you to land your dream job, and you don’t want to lose this opportunity by doing something really stupid, like dressing inappropriately. Every place has a code of conduct and we should learn to respect that. Dressing in flashy clothes or wearing attention seeking accessories is a strict no-no for an interview. Mentioned below are the worst things to wear to an interview.
1
Overly Casual or Loud Clothes
Even if you are interviewing for a laid back job, please don’t take the casual a little too far. Please do not wear T’shirts that says ‘Hey, I’m Awesome’ or for that matter anything that has messages or brand names printed on them. Shorts, ripped jeans, flip-flops and hats among others are also a little over the top for an interview. For men who plan on wearing a suit, please don’t wear Christmassy ties that have elves all over it. Also avoid loud and colours and overly patterned shirts. Casual or hippy - save your dressing sense for after you get that job.
2
Sneakers
We request you to leave the sneakers at home unless you are applying for a creative job. They may be the most awesome pair you own and others might have said that you look fabulous in them, but they are totally in appropriate for an interview. Same applies for those red or green loafers you own. If you are a woman, please wear sensible shoes; don’t settle in for flats or any kind of peep-toe shoes or sandals. Also make sure that your heels are not noisy when you walk. Wearing sneakers, loafers and peep-toes will only showcase that you are lazy and have too casual an approach towards this job.
3
Excessive Accessories
If you want the interviewer to notice your CV more than he notices you, then please avoid wearing excessive accessories. You should refrain from wearing bangles or danglers; they also prove to be a huge distraction. You may have various ear piercings but opt for one simple pair and bangles maybe the ‘in’ thing but leave them at home. Also try not to wear any strong fragrances, they too can be a source of distraction and some people are also sensitive or allergic to certain fragrances.
4
Cleavage Bearing Tops
It is advisable to show as little skin as possible. Remember, it is an interview, not a date. Skip the push up bra and the revealing neckline, your interviewer is most likely judging you and this is going to minimize your chances of getting that job. If you want to be taken seriously, then refrain from loosening up those buttons. Same applies for men, remember the interviewer is not interested to see your chest hair, so save him the trauma and button up.
We hope that these tips are helpful to you while you are all set to go to the interview. If you are really confused as to what to wear, find out in advance about the dress code of the organization and dress accordingly. If you are applying for a casual dress position, wear pants and a button down shirt or a nice blouse.
